'Fix Your Hearts or Die (War on Every Corner)' is comprised of all new abstract work that addresses the death of civility, empathy, kindness, and even common courtesy, with an aspiration towards what we might do about it. Or, whether we can do anything about it at all.
“The rule was always when online, stay out of the comments section. Latimer has been breaking the rule and it started with Women’s Basketball. His cousin Molly Davis was the point guard for the University Women’s Hawkeyes and the teammate of Caitlin Clark.
He named this show before making a single painting that’s in it. He wanted to, somehow, depict what he saw as the death of societal civility, objectivity, optimism and intelligence itself that can be largely attributed to Social Media and what He calls ‘This Machine’ – his smart phone.
With his enthusiasm for the Hawkeyes, algorithms parked a lot of stories about them in his various feeds. He became engrossed and appalled by the comments many left. Then He noticed this vileness and hatred is in every single comments thread, no matter how large or small the enterprise under discussion.
Coincidentally, his drawing practice had migrated to a digital phone-based app while recovering from a lengthy illness.
And without that app, on which he began to create denser and, for a lack of a better word, ‘intestinal’ compositions from collages assembled from sometimes dozens of these drawings, perversely, he never would have made any of these images without this unholy alliance with ‘This Machine’.
He claims he doesn’t know if Art can either depict this chaos or do anything positive about it, but he tried and invites you to look at this tangle of thorns.” - Latimer
